We will first address the most important agent of liquid soap making CAUSTIC SODA also known as SODIUM HYDROXIDE (NaOH) or LYE.
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as lye and caustic soda, is an inorganic compound. It is a white solid and highly caustic metallic base and alkali of sodium which is available in pellets, flakes, granules, and as prepared solutions at different concentrations. Sodium hydroxide forms an approximately 50percent (by mass) saturated solution with water. It is soluble in water, ethanol, and methanol.
Sodium hydroxide is used in many industries, mostly as a strong chemical base in the manufacture of pulp and paper, textiles, drinking water, soaps and detergents and as a drain cleaner. But in the soap world, it is mostly referred to as CAUSTIC SODA.
Haven said that, CAUSTIC SODA is the base on which liquid soap is formed. As we all know that the primary purpose of any soap is to clean. Therefore CaUSTIC SODA is the major bleaching agent present in any liquid soap. It is also the second most dangerous agent in liquid soap following the mighty SURPHURIC ACID. These agents have history of damaging the skin if in contact and is also cancerous when inhaled. These are things you should know before embarking on soap making business. You won’t want to waste your profit on your health I guess so prevention is better than cure.
Adequate care must be taken to prevent yourself from relative hazards. Please don’t get burnt. Also put your family and friends into consideration because CAUSTIC SODA is particularly as clear as ordinary water (odorless and colorless). It may be mistaken for water by people who do not know. There was a girl who was into this liquid soap business some years back. She was living in a self contained apartment and usually soak and keep her chemical agents in her bathroom. Since she was living alone, she could differentiate between the chemical buckets and water buckets. A day came that her friend went visiting and was pressed to use the toilet. Without knowing, the visitor took from the chemical water to clean up because it was covered and she felt it was less polluted. You can imagine the extent of hazard that followed. So please don’t allow what you want to eat to eat you up.
